No doubt cinnamon is a fantastic, fat burning spice, but before you begin using it, it’s important for you to understand some of the potential side effects.
Especially if you are diabetic and use blood sugar lowering medication, or if you use blood thinners, and much more.
Please read this to prevent unpleasant side effects.
some of the side effects of cinnamon that you need to be aware of.
First thing is that most store bought cinnamon contains “Cassia”. This is an herb which resembles cinnamon. It certainly tastes like cinnamon and is usually found on some store shelves labeled as cinnamon when in reality, it does not carry the health benefits of true “Ceyloncinnamon”.
To safely use cinnamon, the first step is knowing what you are getting.
Cassia contains higher amounts of what is known as coumarin than true cinnamon. Coumarin is responsible for some of the side effects listed below.
- Blood Sugar
This is very important for those who are diabetic and use medication to regulate blood sugar. You really need to consult with your physician because cinnamon probably will change how your medication works. When you combine the powerful blood regulating effects of cinnamon with the medication you are using, your blood sugar levels could be lowered too much. It would not be healthy for you in this case. I strongly advise you to see your physician for direction in this matter.
- Antibiotics
This is amazing…cinnamon is a very effective antibiotic, but please check with your physician before using cinnamon if you are taking prescription antibiotics. Cinnamon could very likely change the way prescription antibiotics act on the body.
- Skin Irritation
Skin irritation can occur from the essential oils found in cinnamon. The essential oil of cinnamon should not be applied directly to the skin. Yet, you need to know that allergies are rare but sometimes manifest as sores. If this happens, stop using this immediately.
- Stomach Irritation
If you have any kind of digestive condition such as an ulcer or irritable bowel syndrome, (IBS) please be careful when using cinnamon. Large amounts (more than 1/2 TSP) may cause the lining of the digestive tract to become irritated.
- Increased Heart Rate
Large amounts of cinnamon (more than ½ TSP) have been reported to increase heart rate which could be dangerous for those with a heart condition. Increased heart rate is also linked to cinnamon oil poisoning in children. Cinnamon needs to be placed away from the little hands of children along with other cooking utensils and spices.
- Uterine Contractions
Interestingly, some traditional medicine practitioners will give a mother cinnamon in order to induce or normalize contractions. So please, if you are expecting, it may be prudent to avoid cinnamon.
- Blood Thinning
Cinnamon has been found to have anti-clotting properties and so could cause over thinning of the blood if you are taking blood thinners. If you are scheduled for surgery, it may be prudent to stop the use of cinnamon. It also may be smart to stop using cinnamon during heavy menstruation, or in any situation where a lot of bleeding may occur.
- Kidney and Liver Problems
I read some anecdotal evidence to suggest that those with kidney or liver problems or people who are taking medication that is processed in the liver should avoid using high doses of cinnamon. If you fall in to this category please consult with your physician regarding how your medication and cinnamon may interact.
