It was a couple of days ago when a really dedicated student In one of my indoor spin classes asked me about soy. Apparently she has been flirting with the idea of vegetarianism and is also wanting to get leaner and stay healthy.
She has heard that dairy isn’t healthful and wanted to know if soy could be a healthy substitute.
Sound familiar?
Soy has been highly promoted for 20 or 30 years now as a healthy health food. But, is it really?
Read this first before you decide.
Suffice it to say right here in this article that no, unfermented soy (which is mostly what is sold in the US) is not conducive to a lean body with health and longevity.
In fat, read on to find out how soy turns up by other names you need to be aware of…
Genetically modified soy by a different name
According to several reports by reputable natural health sites like Mercola.com, you are innocently but quite likely bringing home a genetically modified soy-based product in to your kitchen.
Below is a short list of names under which soy tends to hide:
•Mono-diglyceride
•Soya, Soja or Yuba
•TSF (textured soy flour) or TSP (textured soy protein)
•TVP (textured vegetable protein)
•Lecithin
•MSG (monosodium glutamate)
Some soy is healthy
Mercola.com highly recommends only 1 kind of soy. Soy that is fermented. Fermented soy is healthy and extremely nutritious
Traditional Japanese cuisine only uses fermented soy.
some examples of healthful fermented soy products are as follows:
•Tempeh, a fermented soybean cake with a firm texture and nutty, mushroom-like flavor.
•Miso, a fermented soybean paste with a salty, buttery texture (commonly used in miso soup).
•Natto, fermented soybeans with a sticky texture and strong, cheese-like flavor.
•Soy sauce, which is traditionally made by fermenting soybeans, salt and enzymes;
Regarding soy sauce, be very careful about finding the right kind of soy sauce…
Many varieties of soy sauce on the market are made artificially using a dangerous, unhealthy chemical process.
For those of you who enjoy tofu, I’m sorry to say it didn’t make this list because tofu is an unfermented soy product.
Until we can be sure that soy does not have any dangerous residue from its processing, or any GMO issues, this is what I recommend right now.
