How to Get Back on the Wagon

What do we do when we inevitably fall off the wagon?

As you know, there will be times when we simply cannot adhere to our firm intentions to eat right and exercise.

You know what I’m talking about. There’s a deadline at work – and, woops, we miss a few workouts in a row because of a late night at the office. We’re on vacation. Or, we have out of town guest…

What ever it is, life will tend to get in the way. Count on it!

Not only do we miss a few workouts, but even worse, our erratic schedule prevents us from eating the way we need to for fat loss. And suddenly our weight-loss efforts seemed derailed.

It’s tempting to mentally slap our self around, isn’t it? Well, chill out! Being hard on our self is the old you, remember?

Now, here’s the deal. Getting to any goal is not a straight line. Never! In order to be okay with this we must really see this and finally get this in to our consciousness. Reaching an important goal is a road with many ups and downs and many twists and turns. So, what do we do when we see this happening?

The one thing we do not want to do is spend a lot of time blaming anyone or anything. The worst thing we can do is to spend any time whatsoever berating our self.

Let’s decide to simply take setbacks in stride and get right back on that wagon. Another mental strategy is to think of what we would tell a friend in the same predicament.

We would most certainly not talk to them the way we talk to our selves would we. In fact, this is a good lesson in observing how we do conduct inner dialog. Much of our inner dialog is not nice at all. Make no mistake. Our inner dialog does effect our bodies chemistry. So, a disparaging inner dialog filled with recriminations can be damaging. Let’s decide to stop this right now!

So, back to the problem at hand.

Please do not think of wasting even a minute to beat up on yourself. After all, there are no mistakes, just learning experiences. Weight loss is a process and every process takes time. You will encounter small failures – everybody does! Remember, every pound you gain can be lost.

If you miss a workout, it’s not the end of the world! Get to the gym the next day and continue to focus on your short-term goals. Just because you made bad choices today doesn’t mean you can’t start over tomorrow. I know it sounds trite, but every day is truly a new beginning.
