End of story. I could stop right here and we could all go home. But, really, there’s a lot more to talk about. This topic is truly fascinating, and since I also have male clients to assist with their health goals, I discussed this with real live men and here’s what they told me…
… regarding diets, French fries, fat loss, weight loss and healthy eating plans…
I started to wonder if men feel their masculinity being challenged by ordering from the “low calorie” or “diet” section of the menu. Can a real man say, “Hold the fries, gimme that salad”?
Well, I took a survey with men in my spin class, and those with whom my husband work, and an openly gay man friend of mine and what I found out is hilarious.
Listen to this. All the men I spoke to said that if they were out with a group of men they would certainly never choose low calorie items.
No way. No how.
And it gets worse. The general attitude toward eating out with their buddies was, “Bring it on!” There was almost a competition to eat the most and the worse (and of course most of the worse) food possible.
It went way beyond not ordering a salad. If it was green, it was not on the scene. No vegetables in sight please. And they meant that literally, if there was a vegetable it was fried in a combo platter with mozzarella sticks. And of course, these and the other dishes were to be drowned in toppings. Oh, and then—dessert, the bigger the better!
==>> Can you say alarming obesity rates?
This was even true with my gay friend who (of course) has a totally different view of what makes one masculine. Even so, it’s not all bad news.
The good news is fascinating. Men’s behavior and choices are different under certain circumstances…
Men eat healthfully and choose salads and the like when:
- When they eat out alone
- When they’re with someone they want to attract
- Or while eating out with their spouses (provided their spouse chooses healthful from the menu).
Other positive circumstances that influence men’s restaurant choices revolve around lifestyle such as the desire to lose weight or who they hang out with…
In other words, if a man has cultivated a peer group which focuses on healthy eating and active pursuits, then sure, they will certainly make healthier menu choices…
So, if you’re a guy who needs to lose weight and get lean here’s what to do…
you’ll want to develop a peer group that shares your interest in exercise, fitness, and good nutrition.
