I was having dinner with a couple friends recently and I heard one of them rip open several little sugar packs and dump each of them (one after another ( into her coffee. I can’t even imagine being able to gag down a coffee that was so heavily loaded with sugar.

Even diet drinks (which I do not drink anymore because of the harmful artificial sweeteners) are so excessively sweet these days, they’re not even refreshing.

Frankly, this used to be me. I used to think I needed a sweet drink with every meal. If I can change, I know you can too.

Growing up, we drank (of all things) Kool-Aid. My parents couldn’t afford soda. But Kool-Aid is hardly better. In fact, I just saw something on the internet about how to dye your hair with Kool-Aid. I can’t believe we drank that stuff! See, I got used to having a sweet drink with every meal. I somewhat changed when I left home. For over 15 years now I never have any soda (diet or otherwise) or any sweetened drink. Not even juice unless it’s the unsweetened concentrate kind to use as a splash in something like club soda… I’m much healthier for this change and much leaner too.

It’s funny but one of my recommendations when people ask for my advice with their eating habits is to give up drinking a sweetened drink with their meals (this means no diet drinks either)… they look at me like I’m crazy and say “How can I possibly eat a meal without a soda or a diet soda?”?

If you’re addicted to drinking a sweet drink (even diet) with every meal, it would be a wise decision to start to wean yourself off of them and drink water or unsweetened iced tea instead.

Here’s 2 easy, healthy ideas to jazz up plain water:

The first is very easy. Simply squeeze fresh lemon or lime in to a pitcher of filtered water with perhaps a small splash of unsweetened juice concentrate like tart cherry, or cranberry etc. You need to be careful to find truly unsweetened versions. And then use only a splash for a slight sweet taste. Your best bet to locate juice like this is a health food store or Whole Foods Market or online.

The second idea is you can also take a pitcher of unfiltered water and slice in your favorite organic fruit in season. Pineapple, oranges, apples, even melon. Then let the pitcher sit overnight in the fridge.

The next day you’ll have a very refreshing slightly sweet water. You can even add some special green tea to this and really jazz it up with added antioxidant power etc.
