As a fitness instructor, I know that work outs for women are a bit different from those for men. But, actually, the difference is not much.

The biggest difference for a work out for women could be said to be in the head. Or, in other words, we can benefit from the right kind of mind set. For example, to know why you are exercising… What is it going to do for me? How many calories am I burning? Etc…

I also notice that women need to be encouraged that they will not get big and bulky by using weights.

One of the reasons a mind set is so important for women is because of this ever present pressure to look good and attractive. For some, this can be overwhelming and hard to overcome.

This pressure to be thin is of course behind a great deal of the eating disorders more common to women. And the celebrity images really bring this issue to light.

Women are very hard on themselves…We tend to be more competitive with one another. We tend to care about status and one way to attain higher status among our girlfriends is to be the “skinniest”.

I know what I’m talking about here since I have 3 sisters. This was more intensely obvious when we were younger. But no matter the woman’s age, we tend to feel the need to stay young, pretty, and yes even thin.

Well, I find that the best way to accomplish these, or any other fit goals you have is to exercise and work out correctly and to eat whole, unprocessed food and the rest of it will take care of itself.

But, we still need some help. We still need some good fitness and nutrition tips that really work.

As a fitness instructor, I know that the problematic area for most women tends to be the lower body (thighs and butt) yet many of us struggle with a round appearance in the midsection. You know, love handles, and the dread muffin top.

What ever your problem area, experts like Mike Geary from Truth About Abs urges us to understand that excess stomach fat is much more than a vanity issue. Excess fat that accumulates around the belly can be a future indicator for serious chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

So ladies, no matter what your age is (from 18 to 104) besides the issue of looking good, for the sake of our long-term health we need to find a smart work out program that will properly stimulate the right hormonal changes so that we may burn fat right off the tummy.

So to get you started right now, here’s a cool ab exercise I learned from Mike Geary’s program I use to flatten my abs even while sitting right here at the computer while I write this…

It’s an easy, unique trick… it’s basically a simple exercise that you can do anytime, anywhere (even driving) to help get a flat stomach over time.

It’s called “ab vacuums”.

How to do ab vacuums

They can be done from 4 different positions:

  •       standing,
  •       seated (while driving or as a passenger),
  •       kneeling in a four-point position,
  •       or even lying flat on the floor or exercise mat.

How to do:

  •       Start by inhaling deeply.
  •       Then, as you exhale, start pulling the belly button in towards the spine and hold it there for 10-20 seconds while just taking short breaths.
  •       Repeat for several holds.

Get in the habit of doing this at least 4-5 days per week while driving somewhere and you may find that this helps to flatten your stomach more by strengthening the transversus abdominis muscle (the deep abdominal muscles beneath the rectus abdominis) to correct a “lazy belly”.

Wow! I have to tell you that This exercise really works, but it doesn’t increase fat burning… it only helps to flatten a round stomach that has lazy deep ab muscles.

If you want a true “six pack abs” appearance, you still need to burn off the body fat that covers your abs… and that calls for a fully encompassing workout program (not just ab exercises), a strategic nutrition program, and the right mindset for success.
